Whaddney the Robin from Cheltenham Town FC won the 2008 Theatre District Mascot Olympics, with Beau Brummie Bulldog from Birmingham City coming in as Reserve Champion.
Our local mascots Donny from MK Dons and Gully Mouse from Gullivers both managed places in individual events, but seemingly this year the competition from the surrounding football mascots was too strong. Mooy just had a lot of fun, especially in the Ramada Encore Welly Wanging event, when she ended up wearing the wellies instead of throwing them!!! Percy the Penguin from Sno!Zone did actually manage to win the Opus Toboggan Plunge, so obviously he has been practising his technique on the snow!
As ever most of the events saw hindrance from the co-competitiors, led by troublesome Captain Blade from Sheffield Unit, and the final heat of The Slug Egg and Spoon Scramble lived up to its name … with only two mascots managing to dodge through unscathed whilst all the others were in a heap of bodies, eggs and spoons on the floor!!! Due to the judges having to make sometimes harsh decisions, fur and feathers often flew, but all in the name of entertainment!! The mascots certainly didn’t let the crowds down on this front and again I think the favourite was the Midsummer Place Obstacle Dash, where for the first time ever we saw team work when Bertie Bassett and his wobbly head was escorted round the course by about 6 other mascots! Bertie went on to win the most entertaining mascot trophy!
We were honoured to welcome Pete Winkleman to present the prizes, which he did with immense enthusiasm and humour regardless of whether he was talking to a fox, dog, pirate or cow!! We also managed to raise £180 for the local charity we supported throughout the day - St Francis' Childrens Society, an adoption agency who have so far found loving homes for over 2,000 children and are based in Milton Keynes.
This event is set to continue annually as part of the Big Moo, so watch this space for next years event!
